Empowering Communities: How the Governor's House Program Strengthens South Dakota Neighborhoods

The feeling of calling somewhere “home” is a gratifying feeling. South Dakota Housing’s program, the Governor’s House Program, offers a reasonably sized and affordably priced way of living for those who are income-qualified. With over 3,200 homes sold across the state since 1996, this program has continued to grow tremendously. Not only does this program offer those with a place to call home, but it also strengthens South Dakota neighborhoods.

Understanding the Governor's House Program

Established with the mission of providing affordable housing solutions, this program has been a beacon of hope for many South Dakotans. With a rich history dating back to 1996, the program has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of the state's residents. Its core mission remains unwavering: to offer safe, decent, and affordable housing to individuals and families across South Dakota.

These homes are built through a partnership with the Governor’s Inmate Training Program. Participating inmates learn skills and trades in building these homes to prepare them for related work upon release. This program has benefited some prisoners greatly and landed them jobs as soon as they are out. In addition, the number of prisoners that have gone through this program that returned to prison has decreased tremendously.

The Impact on South Dakota Communities

Affordable housing is a fundamental building block of strong communities. It has become a catalyst for positive change, igniting a sense of pride and ownership among residents.

Real-life stories of transformed neighborhoods are testaments to the program's impact. Families have found stable homes, and communities have been revitalized. The program doesn't just provide houses; it provides hope, opportunity, and a brighter future.

We asked Lynne Keller Forbes, President & CEO of the South Eastern Development Foundation, how she felt the Governor’s House Program strengthened South Dakota Neighborhoods, since her Foundation has been purchasing these homes and developing them since 2015.

“A new house in an older neighborhood, especially if it is replacing a dilapidated structure, will often incentivize others in the neighborhood to fix up their own properties which has a positive impact on the entire neighborhood.”

Lynne has been a huge advocate for the Governor’s House Program, even selling one home to her son!

“These are quality, 2x6 homes. They are not manufactured homes. I think they are great starter homes for young professionals, retired people, single parents, and families. I am a firm believer in them. The Governor’s House Program is a great tool in the toolbox to try and address affordable housing.”

The Governor's House Program is not just about building houses; it's about building futures. It's a testament to South Dakota's commitment to its residents and communities, and it serves as a shining example of how collective efforts can empower and strengthen neighborhoods.

As we celebrate the program's impact on our great state, let's remember that our communities are at their strongest when we work together, support one another, and champion affordable housing as a fundamental right for all South Dakotans.
