The newly created Workforce Housing Development Program (WHDP) is designed to increase the supply of quality, attainable homes and help address the growing affordability challenges facing South Dakota homebuyers. Under the Workforce Housing Development Program, homes must be sold to households with incomes at or below 120% of the Area Median Income (AMI). In addition, the sales price of homes constructed with WHDP funds may not exceed $300,000.

South Dakota Housing (SDH) is now accepting applications for one state funded program and several federal funding programs that help communities meet their housing needs. Funding is available in 2026 through the HOME Investment Partnerships, Housing Tax Credit, Housing Opportunity Fund, Housing Trust Fund and Emergency Solutions Grants programs. Applications are available now, with all submissions due by 5:00 pm Central Time on the last working day of August.

To help remove another barrier to affordable homeownership, South Dakota Housing’s Board of Commissioners approved a new initiative to increase access to manufactured housing across the state.

More South Dakotans may now qualify to purchase a Governor's House following action by the South Dakota Housing Board of Commissioners. Effective June 15, 2026, household income eligibility for the Governor's House program increased to 100% of the State Median Income, currently $103,400.

South Dakota Housing’s Board of Commissioners recently awarded $59.4 million to support the construction and rehabilitation of multifamily and single-family rental housing across the state. An additional $742,500 was awarded to nine programs that provide affordable housing assistance.
